3.3. Viewing your data

Caryoscope provides a number of ways to move around and view your data. You can control these using the View Modes toolbar at the top of the window:

3.3.1. Reset Viewpoint

The leftmost button on the View Modes toolbar is the Reset Viewpoint function. Use this to resize the display so that all your data fits into the current Caryoscope window. This is very useful when you have moved around your data and wish to return to a known view.

3.3.2. Dynamic Zoom mode

Dynamic Zoom mode allows you to zoom in and out of your data in a smooth, continuous fashion. Place your mouse at the point where you want the zooming to be centered, press the mouse button and keep it down. You will see a rectangle indicating that point. Keeping the button pressed, move the mouse:

Right

Zoom in along the horizontal (X) axis.

Left

Zoom out along the horizontal (X) axis.

Up

Zoom in along the vertical (Y) axis.

Down

Zoom out along the vertical (Y) axis.

You will see vertical and horizontal lines which will follow your mouse position. The length of each line indicates the speed at which you are zooming along the respective (vertical or horizontal) axis:

3.3.3. Dynamic Pan mode

Using Dynamic Pan mode, you can scroll around your data in a continuous fashion. Place your mouse at any point in the display, press the mouse button and keep it down. You will see a circle indicating that point. Keeping the button pressed, move the mouse in the direction in which you want to scroll through your data. A line will be drawn to follow your mouse position; the direction of that line is the direction you are moving, and its length represents the speed in which you are moving:

3.3.4. Zoom In mode

Zoom In mode allows you to quickly zoom into a region of your data, one step at a time. There are two ways to use it.

The simplest method is to simply click your mouse on the point in the data in which you are interested. The display will be zoomed in by a fixed amount, with the zooming centered on the point you clicked.

The other method is to press the mouse button, keep it pressed, and drag the mouse, to highlight a region of the data:

When you release the mouse button, your data will be zoomed in along the X and Y directions to whatever extent necessary so that the region you highlighted now fills your Caryoscope window.

3.3.5. Zoom Out mode

Zoom Out mode allows you to zoom out, one step at a time. Click the mouse button on the point around which you want to zoom out. The display will be zoomed out by a fixed amount, with the zooming centered on the point you clicked.

3.3.6. Navigate Mode

In Navigate Mode, as you move your mouse over a data element, you will see a descriptive label like a sticky note:

The text in this label is based on the data, and you can control how it is generated: see Section 3.2.8, “Feature tooltip expression”. When you click on a data element, Caryoscope will open a corresponding URL in your Web browser:

Once again, this URL is based on your data, and you can also control how it is generated: see Section 3.2.9, “Feature URL expression”.

3.3.7. Scroll bars

At any time, you can use the vertical and horizontal scroll bars to move around your data.
